Fenprof criticizes ‘rankings’ for stigmatizing schools and hierarchizing students

The largest teachers’ union has renewed its criticism today of the media for publishing analyses based on students’ results in national exams and internal grades from the Ministry of Education, Science, and Innovation (MECI).

This marks the 25th year that ‘rankings’ have been released, now incorporating various data analyses that go beyond the traditional list of educational institutions organized solely by students’ average scores in national exams.

The figures now also highlight the efforts made by schools working with the most disadvantaged students, who typically face greater academic challenges. Additionally, they show schools where all students successfully progress without repeating a year, and for the first time this year, they reveal average results of foreign students.

However, the Fenprof asserts that despite being presented under a veneer of rigor, demands, and technology, the ‘rankings’ are stigmatizing. They argue that these rankings organize and eliminate students through national exams, discredit the work of schools and teachers by undervaluing healthy learning and continuous assessment, and promote competition by encouraging individualism through these exams.

According to the federation, the sole objective of the ‘rankings’ is to reinforce the ideological prejudice that private education is superior and public education is inferior, thereby boosting the education business at the expense of the state.

In a statement sent to media outlets today, Fenprof once again expressed its support for all teachers who “continue daily to strive for quality education and schools for everyone.”
