The introduction of certain specimens of exotic animals in the region requires authorization.

The National Republican Guard (GNR) seized two ferrets at Madeira International Airport, in Funchal, on July 4, for the irregular introduction of pets of specimens included on the Regional List of Invasive Species.

In an email sent to Notícias ao Minuto, the military revealed that, as well as seizing the animals, they had drawn up an administrative offense notice against the owner of the animals, a 48-year-old woman from Frankfurt, Germany.

The suspect was identified and notified to regularize the situation with the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (IFCN) within 48 hours, and was appointed trustee of the seized specimens. The GNR recalls that the introduction of certain exotic animal specimens into the Autonomous Region of Madeira requires permits that must be requested before the animals arrive in the archipelago.
