An exhibition of antique costumes, street performances, coffee concerts, shows, and workshops are part of the event’s lineup, with free public participation in the activities. Pre-registration is required for workshops, according to the Museums and Monuments of Portugal on their website.
The starting point of the Levada – Festival of Dance and Historical Music will be the Convent of Christ on September 5, where at 2:30 p.m., the exhibition ‘Trajes Camões’ will be inaugurated, a display by the National Costume Museum as part of the event.
The exhibition can be visited upon entering the monument, allowing the public to view pieces from the museum’s collection, within the historical context of the convent whose construction began in 1160, linked to the Order of the Templars and the Order of Christ.
The program will continue that evening at 9:30 p.m. near the Chapel of Santa Iria, with a coffee concert featuring street performers and DJ Salito.
On Saturday, September 6, the city will open to the festival with street performances in the historic center starting at 2:30 p.m., and at 9:30 p.m., Praça da República will host the final show, concluding the second day of activities.
The last day, Sunday, September 7, will be dedicated to historical dance and music workshops, taking place at Mouchão from 9:30 a.m., requiring prior registration. The program includes sessions of Roman, oriental, and children’s dances.
According to the organizers, the festival aims to offer the public “a unique way to experience the historical and cultural heritage of Tomar,” as a meeting point between the past and present that combines iconic venues with artistic recreation.
The Convent of Christ, classified as a National Monument in 1910 and a World Heritage Site in 1983, is one of the most visited monumental sites in the country, having received more than 300,000 visitors in 2023, according to the most recent official data.
