
The 2024 legislative elections saw four main political forces vying for Braga’s 19 seats. The AD secured eight mandates, the PS obtained six, Chega claimed four, and the Liberal Initiative took one.
The Left Bloc is introducing Francisco Louçã, one of the party’s founders, aiming to regain representation in Braga.
The CDU’s lead candidate is Sandra Cardoso, a professor. Livre has put forward Jorge Araújo, an environmental engineer, while PPM has nominated Sandra Alemão, a lawyer. Nova Direita’s candidate is José Joaquim Peixoto, a businessman.
Other candidates include Ergue-te’s Tiago Rodrigues, a shoemaking worker; Juntos pelo Povo’s João Horta, a teacher; ADN’s Gonçalo Bandeira, also a teacher; RIR’s António Fagundes, a merchant; PAN’s Tiago Teixeira, an operations assistant; and Volt’s Miguel Amador Rosa, a businessman.
The PCTP/MRPP’s candidacy was rejected by João Paulo Pereira, the presiding judge of the Braga Judicial District Court, due to late submission and insufficient details about the candidates.
An official spokesperson for the PCTP/MRPP reported that an appeal has been filed with the Constitutional Court, arguing that their list was submitted on time and that there is a 48-hour window to complete candidate details.
Comprising 14 municipalities and a population of 846,515 according to the 2021 census, the Braga district elects 19 deputies, making it the third-largest contributor to the Assembly of the Republic, alongside Setúbal and following Lisbon (48) and Porto (40).
This year, 782,401 voters are registered, marking an increase of 2,238 from 2024.
