A brawl between several individuals in Ribeira Brava, Madeira Island, ended with a police officer and a detainee injured, the Public Security Police (PSP) revealed on Monday in a statement.

The PSP reports that everything happened over the weekend during a “public disturbance involving several individuals.”

When trying to put an end to the fight and identify those involved, one of the participants, “visibly altered,” opposed the authorities’ intervention, “adopting an uncooperative and violent posture.”

Despite efforts by the PSP to calm the man’s “animosity,” he continued to “insult and threaten” the officers, eventually physically assaulting one of them.

The suspect was thus arrested and transported to the police station, where he was formally charged with the crime of resistance and coercion of a public official, as well as assault on a law enforcement officer, and subjected to identity and residence terms.

The PSP further states that medical assistance was provided to both the assaulted police officer and the detained suspect due to “the injuries they presented.”
