Visitors to Praia do Cabedelo in Figueira da Foz experienced a tense situation on the afternoon of Tuesday, August 26, when several beachgoers were swept away by a wave, causing panic along the shore.
The prompt actions of lifeguards on the scene were crucial in ensuring the safety of those involved.
Images shared on social media, which have been reposted by over 3,000 users, depict a crowded beach with umbrellas, dozens of people, and a red warning flag.
Suddenly, a wave swept away not only the belongings of the beachgoers but also some individuals, including a child.
Two lifeguards are seen rushing to assist a fallen swimmer struggling against the strong waves present at the location.
Nearby, a woman and a man were also able to prevent a child from being carried away by the wave.
On social media, many users criticized the beachgoers’ decisions to visit the shore despite Portugal being under a yellow alert due to rough seas.
“With all the warnings given, and people still ignore them; truly, humanity respects less and less,” commented one of the over 500 users who responded to the video.
“Even with warnings, people do not understand,” added another.
The comments also included praise for the lifeguards, with terms like “spectacular,” “attentive,” and “blessed lifeguards” being commonly used.
It is noted that maritime agitation caused damage across the country on Tuesday, August 26. In Praia da Parede, Cascais, a man is reported missing.
