“Fortunately, as we anticipated might happen if there were no changes, we managed to get it under resolution,” around 9 p.m., stated Jorge Martins, commander of the Figueiró dos Vinhos Volunteer Firefighters, to the Lusa news agency.
The fire, which began in the village of Vale Vicente, in the municipality of Figueiró dos Vinhos, Leiria district, was “quickly combated,” including the “protection of the village without any problem.”
Though he had not yet conducted a detailed assessment, the commander estimated that “around 27 hectares of bush and eucalyptus must have burned,” and now that it has entered resolution, efforts continue to extinguish it completely.
The fire alert was raised at 5:01 p.m. in Campelo, in the municipality of Figueiró dos Vinhos, Leiria district.
By 10:30 p.m., the operation to combat the flames involved 209 personnel and 61 vehicles, according to the official website of the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC).
