The Vice-President of Porto City Council, Filipe Araújo, has announced his candidacy for the leadership of the municipality in the upcoming local elections.
“This is something that makes me very proud. It is a continuation of work, reflection, and support I have received over the past few months. It’s deeply rooted in the spirit that presided over the formation of a group of citizen voters in 2013 with an independent and freely managed principle, focused on the city and its residents. Now with the logic of 12 years of management, it seems this is something we can offer the people of Porto—a continuity of a city that has transformed over 12 years into a paradigm of culture, economic development, social cohesion, and sustainability,” Filipe Araújo revealed in an interview with SIC Notícias.
When asked if he would have the support of the current president, Rui Moreira, Araújo recalled only that he has worked with the mayor “over these years” and is the “only councilman who has been with him from the beginning.”
“I have been his vice-president for eight years and owe him and the people of Porto, who elected us until October, my loyalty. I will carry out my term to the end. My relationship with him is one of strict collaboration, as it has been over the years, and will certainly be in the future. As is public knowledge, Rui Moreira has already stated that he will try to remain distant from this electoral dispute,” added Porto’s vice-president.
This candidacy by Filipe Araújo adds to those of Manuel Pizarro and Pedro Duarte.
Notably, in February, Rui Moreira had already mentioned that Araújo would be a candidate for the presidency of the municipality in this year’s elections, although the vice-president declined to announce a candidacy at that time, stating it was not the ideal moment.
Rui Moreira, at the time, mentioned that as the Mayor, he “cannot make” statements about his preferred candidate, later stating that “they say there are several candidates.”
The local elections are expected to take place between 22 September and 14 October 2025.
