Filmmaker Miguel Gomes invited to join the Hollywood Academy

The Academy, comprising about 10,500 members worldwide across 19 technical branches, has announced invitations to artists and executives recognized for their significant contributions to cinema.

“Through their commitment to cinematic creation and the film industry at large, these exceptionally talented individuals have made indelible contributions to our global community,” stated Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang in the announcement.

The list of 534 invitees includes prominent figures from Brazilian cinema, such as actress Fernanda Torres, costume designer Claudia Kopke, directors Daniel Filho and Gabriel Mascaro, and producer Maria Carlota Bruno.

Spanish filmmaker Albert Serra, who has collaborated on several Portuguese co-productions, is also on the list.

Miguel Gomes joins a select group of past Portuguese invitees, including casting director Patrícia Vasconcelos, producers Bruno Caetano and Luís Urbano, and directors Abi Feijó, João González, Mónica Santos, and Regina Pessoa.

Born in Lisbon 53 years ago, Miguel Gomes has been a prominent figure in Portuguese cinema, presenting portrayals of Portugal to international audiences and critics, as well as festival juries.

Last year, his film ‘Grand Tour’ earned him the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival, marking the first time this accolade was won by a Portuguese director.

Miguel Gomes has garnered several other international festival awards, including the Critics Award at the Berlin Festival for ‘Tabu’ (2012), the Best Director award (shared with Maureen Fazendeiro) at the Mar del Plata Festival (Argentina) for ‘Diários de Otsoga’ (2021), and a special jury prize in Guadalajara (Mexico) for ‘Aquele querido mês de agosto’ (2009).

His upcoming film, produced by Uma Pedra no Sapato, is titled ‘Selvajaria’ and is inspired by the book ‘Sertões’ by Brazilian author Euclides da Cunha, which Miguel Gomes regards as “one of the best books ever written in Portuguese.”
