“There is currently only one minor victim who is being assessed on site,” stated a source from the Douro Sub-regional Command, noting that “they were likely affected by smoke.”
The same source mentioned that the fire was extinguished by care home staff, and firefighters are now “working on smoke extraction.”
The care home, located on Avenida da Misericórdia, “houses between 70 and 80 elderly individuals,” the source added.
According to the website of the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority, around 4:45 AM, there were 14 operatives at the scene supported by seven vehicles.
The alert for the incident was given at 3:56 AM.
