The National Commander of Emergency and Civil Protection, Mário Silvestre, has identified the fire in Arouca, Aveiro, as the primary concern, with all efforts and additional resources being directed there.
The fire, which began on Monday in Arouca, Aveiro district, currently has three active fronts. As a result, authorities have had to confine the village of Vila Viçosa, according to sources from the local council and civil protection.
To illustrate the scope of the fire, Mário Silvestre noted that a fire in a “state of extinction” releases up to four thousand kilowatts per hour. Currently, the Arouca fire is releasing twenty thousand kilowatts of energy.
Regarding the fires in Penamacor and Lindoso, the commander stated that the “situation is quite controlled” and that the Penamacor fire is expected to be “resolved in the coming hours.” “At 8 a.m., only 30% of the fire was active,” the commander added.
The Lindoso fire poses some “suppression problems” due to the challenging terrain, which leaves some burning areas completely inaccessible to firefighters.
As for the burned areas, Mário Silvestre mentioned that preliminary data indicates that 511 hectares have burned in Penamacor, while up to 2,000 hectares have burned in Lindoso.
