Fire in Castro Daire brought under control but resources still on site

The wildfire that broke out on Friday afternoon in Castro Daire, which was battled by 240 emergency personnel, has been contained, according to a source from the Viseu Dão Lafões Subregional Command.

“The fire was brought under control this morning around 6:00 AM, though some resources remain on site,” the source informed Lusa agency.

As of 6:45 PM, 63 personnel with 22 vehicles were still at the scene of the fire.

The fire initially had two fronts, one spanning one kilometer and the other one and a half kilometers, by late Friday afternoon.

On Friday, the Commander of the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) described it as a “complex fire” with “high spread speeds.”

The alert for this fire in Bustelo, in the parish of Almofala, Castro Daire municipality, Viseu district, was issued at 5:00 PM.

By 8:30 PM, the fire was being fought by 241 personnel supported by 71 vehicles, according to ANEPC’s online page.

Aerial resources were also deployed during the afternoon to assist in combating the flames.
