Fire in Lagos mobilizes more than 600 operatives

“Overnight, we experienced some flare-ups in the Feiteira area, but they were controlled by the operatives on the ground. With daylight, we will reassess the situation,” said an official from the Algarve’s Sub-Regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command.

The source confirmed that there are no homes at risk and no casualties reported.

As of 7:00 AM, the fire was being fought by 666 operatives, supported by 223 ground resources.

The blaze that erupted on Sunday in Bordeira, Algarve, shortly after noon, destroyed a second home in Aljezur, which was unoccupied.

The fire that started Sunday in Aljezur, Algarve, intensified on Tuesday afternoon due to projections outside the controlled perimeter, according to Civil Protection.

In a press conference on Tuesday night, Abel Gomes, the deputy commander of the Algarve Regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command (CREPC), stated that the flames, fueled by continuous wind, are now moving eastward in the region.

The worsening of the fire was attributed to a rekindling in the Feiteira area, leading to four projections on one flank of the fire while firefighting units were engaged in consolidation and extinction operations, he explained.

Abel Gomes indicated that the projections expanded the fire’s perimeter to the east, increasing the area of the flames from 30% to 40%.

The same source further clarified that since Sunday, there have been three injured individuals requiring hospital care and nine others attended to on-site, though not classified as injured.
