Fire in Montalegre controlled by 10:30 PM

The Montalegre fire commander, David Teixeira, announced that the fire, which reignited this afternoon after being declared contained on Sunday, was once again brought under control by 10:30 PM.

Teixeira indicated that crews will remain on-site throughout the night and into Tuesday to prevent any further flare-ups.

He also mentioned that a bulldozer is creating a perimeter around the fire in the Serra do Larouco to “minimize the likelihood of it reigniting.”

Artur Mota, the sub-regional commander of Alto Tâmega and Barroso of the Civil Protection, reported no injuries or displacements.

Teixeira further confirmed no homes were affected by the fire.

The blaze consumed an area of oak, pine forest, and brush, according to the Montalegre fire department deputy commander, Júlio Lopes.

The National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority’s website reported at 11:20 PM that 189 personnel were mobilized to combat the fire, supported by 60 vehicles.
