The fire is reported to have begun in an area called Vale da Junca, in the municipality of the Castelo Branco district. According to the Sub-regional Commander of Emergency and Civil Protection of Beira Baixa, Pedro Nunes, there are currently no localities under threat.
Pedro Nunes stated that although the meteorological conditions are unfavorable due to high temperatures, efforts are underway on the ground to combat the blaze.
“We are developing a strategy to flank the fire to weaken its head. We already have two machines working at the head of the fire, so we need to give about 30 to 45 minutes to assess how this strategy aligns with the fire’s spread,” Nunes said.
According to the website of the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection, as of 17:00, 250 personnel and 63 vehicles have been mobilized for the operation, supported by 12 aerial resources.
