Fire in the Peneda-Gerês National Park “coming to an end”

In the municipality of Ponte da Barca, Viana do Castelo district, 297 personnel supported by 113 vehicles were engaged, as reported by the Civil Protection website at 8:00 PM.

On the same platform, the fire status was marked as “concluded.”

The blaze began on the night of July 26 in the Peneda-Gerês National Park (PNPG), was declared controlled on Sunday, and by this morning, it was “in resolution.”

The Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF) reported today that the flames consumed 5,786 hectares of the PNPG, based on provisional data.

The ICNF noted that the fire affected a total area of 7,550 hectares, with 5,786 hectares burned within the PNPG.

The PNPG spans an area of 69,596 hectares across the districts of Braga (municipality of Terras de Bouro), Viana do Castelo (municipalities of Melgaço, Arcos de Valdevez, and Ponte da Barca), and Vila Real (municipality of Montalegre).

The Mayor of Ponte da Barca stated today that the fire caused “significant losses” in various business sectors and left animals without pasture.

“Nearly our entire park area was consumed. Only a small portion remained unscathed. The Serra Amarela and surrounding areas were completely burned. Combining the hectares burned in our municipality with those in Terras de Bouro, over 7,500 hectares were consumed in the PNPG,” said Augusto Marinho, Mayor of Ponte da Barca, Viana do Castelo district.

The Peneda-Gerês National Park (PNPG) was established in 1971 and is managed by the ICNF.
