Fire left a “very large” trail of destruction in Aguiar da Beira

“They ordered several houses, two or three inhabited, and the others were secondary residences. I can’t quantify the total number of affected houses exactly; we will start that assessment next week, if the fire allows,” stated the municipal president, Virgílio Cunha.

The mayor said that the fire mainly affected agricultural barns and warehouses, farming tools, cultivated lands, pastures, hay, chestnut groves, and pine forests.

Today, Saturday, the situation is “much calmer” than on Friday in Aguiar da Beira, in the district of Guarda, where both operatives and the population remain vigilant for any flare-ups.

“We are consolidating the fronts due to some flare-ups between Sequeiros and Fonte Arcadinha, in Ponte do Abade, Gradiz, and Barranha,” the mayor noted.

On-site are firefighters, local residents, and municipal employees, supported by dozens of vehicles and a helicopter.

“The situation still concerns us, but it’s nothing compared to what we experienced on Friday,” he emphasized.

Virgílio Cunha added that the wind has now calmed, which is a “great help.”

“It’s nothing like what we had yesterday [Friday]. Today, it blows with less intensity and always from the same quadrant,” he said.

The municipality of Aguiar da Beira began being affected on Wednesday and Thursday by fires that originated in Trancoso, in the district of Guarda, and Sernancelhe and Sátão, in the district of Viseu.
