A spokesperson for the Sub-Regional Command of Emergency and Civil Protection for Alto Tâmega and Barroso reported that efforts to combat the flames continued through the night with reinforced ground resources.
As recorded on the Civil Protection’s website, by around 5:45 AM, 189 operatives and 50 ground units were present at the scene, nearly double the figures reported late Saturday afternoon.
Throughout the day, at least 11 aerial units were deployed, but these had to be withdrawn as night fell.
Five of the aerial units were provided by Spanish authorities.
The fire started at approximately 1:20 AM and spread with two fronts, one of which moved towards Spain. The Spanish news agency EFE reported that Portuguese and Spanish authorities were in contact regarding the fire-fighting efforts.
