“The wind is very strong with very strong gusts. There are many resources on the ground fighting the fire, but as a precaution, some people had to be evacuated from their homes,” in the parish of Barão de São João, stated Hugo Pereira.
The mayor did not specify how many people were evacuated but mentioned that they were from “houses scattered throughout the forest [of Barão de São João] and the urban perimeter area with the forest.”
These individuals are now concentrated in “two or three safer locations” in Barão de São João, according to Hugo Pereira.
Reinforcing that many resources are on site and committed to battling the fire, the mayor emphasized that the primary goal has been “to safeguard the population.”
In a separate statement, the mayor of Aljezur said the situation calmed in that municipality as the fire moved towards Lagos, noting a front “with some activity.”
Reported damages include a second home being burned and the temporary evacuation of some residents, all of which have been addressed.
“Regardless, it’s going to be a night of hard work,” said José Gonçalves.
As per the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection’s website, as of 22:50, 492 personnel were battling the fire, supported by 173 vehicles.
