Fire (without damage) outside the Sheraton Hotel. It started with a homeless person.

A fire broke out on Wednesday outside the Sheraton Hotel in the center of Lisbon, resulting in smoke spreading into the building’s ventilation system.

An alert was issued around 3 p.m., with no “personal or material damages” reported.

A source from the Lisbon Fire Department stated that the fire was caused by an individual experiencing homelessness and the resulting smoke entered the ventilation system, triggering the alarm and causing concern, as well as an increase in emergency response personnel. However, “the ventilation functioned properly” and, as explained by the hotel’s statement, there was no “need to evacuate the building.”

“The alert was immediately triggered by the hotel’s security system, which detected smoke in the building’s basement, with five underground floors”, the statement noted, emphasizing that “the prompt response by the hotel’s initial intervention team and the Lisbon Fire Department, who arrived on the scene with 39 personnel and 11 vehicles, allowed for the fire to be extinguished quickly.”

The incident was resolved “without any harm to hotel guests and staff,” and the hotel remains operational.
