“In light of the lack of concrete responses from the Government, measures of responsible protest were approved, always safeguarding the rescue for the population”, announced the president of the congress board, Luis Gil Barreiros, presenting the conclusions of the 45th National Congress of the LBP, ongoing since Saturday in Alcobaça, Leiria district.
From the voting on the 16 motions presented at the congress, protests were approved, the most debated of which was the “refusal to carry out hospital discharges”, meaning the transportation of non-urgent patients discharged from hospitals, for periods that could progressively increase from 12 to 24 or 48 hours.
The protests will also include “district and national gatherings, slow marches, and coordinated siren blasts”, the congress president stated.
The firefighters, dissatisfied with the current situation and demanding responses from the Government, have also decided on the suspension of institutional presence at protocol events, media campaigns, protest banners at stations, monthly vehicle mobilization to the Assembly of the Republic, and initiatives like collecting 20,000 citizen signatures to pressure legislative actions.
These actions “reflect the sector’s determination to make their voice heard and to demand respect for their claims,” added Gil Barreiros.
