Firefighters advocate for mandatory drills in public transportation.

The meeting with Carlos Moedas was requested by ANBP before the incident at the Glória elevator last Wednesday in Lisbon, but the fatal accident dominated the agenda, with firefighters emphasizing prevention.

Firefighters should have “direct contact” with “everything that revolves” around cities, aiming to conduct drills in collaboration with technicians and companies supervising the equipment.

“Conducting these exercises, drills, visits, and working with firefighters reduces the likelihood of incidents of this nature,” stated Fernando Curto, president of ANBP. “These parties,” he continued, “must produce a report that will be studied and analyzed.”

Curto emphasized, “It should be mandatory for this to happen,” adding that Carlos Moedas “agreed and found it legitimate” to adopt this procedure in the future.

“The safety of the city of Lisbon and the country must be the primary obligation of the authorities,” noted the firefighter.

Lisbon’s mayor, the social democrat Carlos Moedas, did not make any statements at the end of the meeting.

The accident involving the Glória elevator last Wednesday resulted in 16 fatalities and several serious injuries.
