Fires? Civil Protection has 10 “safety recommendations”: Stay informed

Recent days have been marked by the wildfires affecting mainland Portugal. In this context, the government shared “ten measures” on the social media platform X this Sunday afternoon to ensure personal safety.

“Learn how to act safely,” the announcement states, adding, “During firefighting efforts, your attitude makes the difference.” It further notes, “Civil Protection recommends 10 simple and effective measures to safeguard your life and assist those on the ground.”

Here are the “10 safety recommendations for the public during rural fire combat operations”:

  1. Trust the authorities and follow their guidance. Authorities have the necessary information and experience to ensure your protection;
  2. Stay away from the fire zone. Without appropriate training and equipment, you risk being surrounded by flames, suffering burns, or smoke inhalation;
  3. In case of evacuation, head immediately to a safe shelter. Be informed in advance about local shelters or pre-defined collective refuges;
  4. Cooperate with operational teams. Do not block access routes and facilitate the movement of relief vehicles. Your cooperation is essential;
  5. Do not attempt to photograph or film the fire zone. These actions can distract you and expose you to additional dangers. Stay aware of your surroundings;
  6. Do not use drones. Their use is prohibited as they interfere with aerial operations and can cause serious accidents;
  7. Stay away from landing and refueling areas for aircraft. The wind force generated by aircraft can project objects and put your physical integrity at risk;
  8. Avoid driving on roads near the fire. These routes may be reserved for emergency vehicles or become dangerous due to smoke, flames, or falling debris;
  9. Combat misinformation. Stay informed through official sources and do not share rumors or unverified information;
  10. Assume your role: We are all Civil Protection. Adopt safe behaviors, be alert to risks, cooperate with authorities, and promote self-protection.

With the principle that “protection starts with you” and “your attitude can save lives,” remember: “In case of fire, call 112.”

The same announcement also lists the official sources of information deemed ‘reliable’ and worth following, including the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC), Municipalities, Fire Brigades, and Security Forces.
