Fires ‘cut’ traffic on 2 national roads in Viseu and Guarda

Rural fires affecting Portugal are disrupting traffic on at least two roads in the districts of Viseu and Guarda, according to the GNR (National Republican Guard).

As per a statement issued this afternoon, by 3 p.m., the National Road 323 was closed in both directions between Távora and Granjinha in Viseu.

In Guarda, National Road 330 is closed between Penaverde and Maceira in both directions.

The GNR noted, “The protection of people and property amid rural fires continues to be a priority for the GNR, supported by a preventive approach and patrolling efforts in forest areas.”

The GNR reminds:

  • Burnings and bonfires are among the main causes of wildfires in Portugal;
  • Burning of debris, bonfires, and piles of vegetation is prohibited when there is a very high or maximum rural fire danger level, requiring authorization or prior notification at other times;
  • To prevent accidents, follow safety rules, never work alone, and keep a mobile phone with you.

The GNR also highlights needed preventive measures and encourages public cooperation in fire prevention and fighting efforts:

  • Avoid performing risky activities, such as making fires near forested areas;
  • Adhere to instructions from authorities on the ground;
  • Avoid obstructing access routes used by emergency vehicles to help firefighting efforts;
  • Refrain from traveling to fire zones if not involved in combat operations, as this could hinder fire-fighting activities;
  • Report any activities or actions that could lead to wildfires to GNR officers;
  • Call 112 in case of witnessing a wildfire occurrence.

The Government extended the alert status until the end of Friday, citing weather forecasts predicting increased temperatures and elevated rural fire risks.

The fire in Arganil is a primary concern for authorities, recently endangering several villages which have been evacuated.

In Trancoso, the situation is the second most concerning, followed by the fire in Vila Real.

In Alvão, Vila Real authorities have managed to control 80% of the fire.
