Forest fires have consumed approximately 75,000 hectares to date, with more than half burning in the past three weeks, according to provisional data from the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF).
Estimates released today by the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), based on satellite images from the European Copernicus program, also indicate that Portugal is the third European Union country most affected by forest fires this year, following Spain (148,205 hectares) and Romania (123,816 hectares).
The burned area this year is nine times greater than in the same period last year and is the second largest since 2017.
