Fires. Highway 24 reopened in the Chaves/Spain direction.

This afternoon saw a significant resurgence of a fire near the Outeiro Seco business park in Chaves, prompting the closure of the A24 at 15:20 in both directions. The blaze threatened businesses in the industrial park located in the north of Vila Real district.

The GNR announced that the A24 reopened at 21:15, allowing traffic from Casino (Chaves) to Vila Verde da Raia, near the Spanish border, while the opposite direction remained closed to facilitate firefighting operations.

By 21:30, according to the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority’s online platform, 498 personnel and 158 land vehicles were deployed to tackle the incident.

The fire had entered the resolution phase at 10:35 today after “a night of intense work” involving “all available resources” and “the use of heavy machinery.”

This afternoon, the fire advanced towards Vila Verde da Raia and the Cocanha industrial area.

Strong winds continue to pose a major challenge in controlling the flames.

The fire crossed into the municipality of Chaves on Tuesday, originating from Galicia, Spain, through the Cambedo da Raia region and impacting several villages such as Agrela, Torre, Couto, Vilela Seca, Outeiro Seco, and the Chaves business area.

On Monday, the blaze had already crossed the border at the area of Vilar de Perdizes in Montalegre.
