Fires? Montenegro asks the country to “not let its guard down”

The Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, issued a warning that it is not yet time to stop being cautious regarding wildfires, emphasizing that weather conditions in the coming weeks may be unfavorable for combating potential fires.

“I want to alert the country not to let our guard down. In the coming weeks, let’s adopt responsible attitudes, respecting any guidelines from the competent public authorities, if necessary,” he stated in Sernancelhe, Viseu district, a region affected by the August fires.

“We still face the possibility of adverse weather conditions and factors that could increase the risk level,” he warned, alongside the Minister of Economy and Territorial Cohesion, Manuel Castro Almeida.

Stressing that the post-fire process is being handled with “speed,” Montenegro also noted that citizens’ attitudes in following authorities’ advice could be crucial: “To be more efficient in the future, to prevent the occurrence of major wildfires.”
