
In a phone statement, an official source from the ULS de Coimbra reported that three injured individuals are “under observation.”
The same source stated that one of the injured from the Guarda district, admitted with a “reserved prognosis” to that hospital unit, remains in the same condition.
The nurse was injured while attempting to assist locals in fighting fires in Vila Franca do Deão, in the municipality of Guarda, and was admitted to the hospital with severe burns.
Another of the victims was injured in a fire truck accident in Covilhã. The injured person from that accident, which also resulted in one fatality, remains “stabilized” following surgery on Sunday.
The third individual admitted in Coimbra since Thursday is a firefighter from Pinhel, who sustained severe burns in the Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo fire, in the Guarda district.
Mainland Portugal has been affected by multiple large-scale rural fires since July, especially in the North and Central regions.
The fires have caused four fatalities, including a firefighter, numerous injuries, some serious, and have either totally or partially destroyed primary and secondary residences, as well as agricultural and livestock enterprises and forested areas.
Portugal activated the European Civil Protection Mechanism, under which it received support from aerial resources.
According to provisional official data, approximately 234,000 hectares burned in the country up to August 22.
The fire that erupted in Arganil on the 13th has covered the largest burnt area ever in Portugal, with 64,000 hectares consumed, according to a provisional report by the Institute of Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF).
