André Marques, the brakesman responsible for operating the cabin of the Elevador da Glória, which derailed on Wednesday afternoon in Lisbon, has been identified as the first fatality. There are a total of 14 other deceased victims.
In a statement released late last night, the Transport Workers’ Union (SITRA) expressed “deepest condolences to all family members, friends, and colleagues” of the victim.
“SITRA extends its deepest and heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the Brakesman serving with Carris Company, André Jorge Gonçalves Marques, who passed away today (03-09-2025), following the tragic and fatal accident involving the Elevador da Glória in Lisbon,” reads a note shared on social media.
The union also offered “condolences to the families and friends” of the other victims and wished a “speedy recovery” to the injured.
André Marques was “kind, helpful, and benevolent”
Actor Miguel also took to social media to recall an interview he conducted with André Marques for the program ‘Alô Portugal’, describing the brakesman as “kind, helpful, and benevolent”.
The actor, who mentioned that the brakesman agreed to be interviewed “without any prior notice”, offered his “condolences” to the family, friends, and colleagues.
Glória Lift Derailment Results in 15 Dead and 23 Injured
The Glória funicular, located in the center of Lisbon, derailed at 18:04 on Wednesday, on Calçada da Glória.
The most recent reports indicate 15 fatalities and 23 injuries, including over five in critical condition.
Lisbon and Vale do Tejo’s National Director of the Judiciary Police (PJ), João Oliveira, stated that the injured are being treated at hospitals São José, Santa Maria, São Francisco Xavier, Cascais, and Amadora.
Regarding the nationalities involved, João Oliveira noted that some victims are of foreign nationality, which “adds a level of difficulty for identification,” without providing specific data.
The government has declared a national day of mourning for Thursday, while the Lisbon City Council has declared three days of municipal mourning.
The Elevador da Glória is operated by Carris, connecting the Restauradores to the Jardim de São Pedro de Alcântara in Bairro Alto, along a route of about 265 meters, and is highly popular among tourists.
