First lighthouse of Cape Verde classified as National Cultural Heritage

O farol D. Maria Pia é classificado em toda a sua dimensão e zona de proteção especial”, lê-se no documento que distingue o edifício.

The D. Maria Pia lighthouse, a renowned symbol of the Cape Verdean capital, has been formally designated as protected in its entirety and within its special protection zone, according to an official document recognizing the building.

This iconic structure, which has adorned postage stamps, was recently refurbished and has been active since 1881, continuously illuminating the entrance to Praia’s harbor.

“The cultural heritage of the Cape Verdean people has been catalogued, studied, and protected through various policies and preservation projects,” the ordinance explained.

The main objective is to promote the development and strengthening of the country’s cultural identity, with the D. Maria Pia lighthouse serving as an “inspiration for artists, poets, intellectuals, photographers, researchers, and students.”

Simultaneously, the declaration aims to establish mechanisms to ensure its regular maintenance, prevent degradation, and enhance the cultural value and usage of the building.
