“The road between Piornos in Covilhã and Lagoa Comprida in Seia, as well as access to Torre, have been closed since 9:30 PM due to heavy snowfall tonight and strong winds,” stated a representative from the Beiras and Serra da Estrela Sub-regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command.
The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) had forecast showers for Wednesday night in the Serra da Estrela region, with snow possible at altitudes above 1,600 to 1,800 meters due to a sharp drop in temperature.
Continental Portugal is being affected by a cold frontal surface with moderate to strong activity, causing rain, thunderstorms, and wind, according to IPMA.
