
The AMN reported in a statement that the alert for the incident was received at 12:40 local time (one hour later in Lisbon) through the Ponta Delgada Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC Delgada).
Following the alert, members of the Horta Maritime Police Command, the Horta Volunteer Firefighters, and the Medical Emergency Vehicle (VMER) from the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) were immediately dispatched to the scene.
“Upon arrival, it was found that the victim, a man around 60 years old, had already been pulled from the water by bystanders nearby, with firefighters and VMER personnel immediately starting resuscitation efforts,” the statement added.
The man was transported in serious condition to a hospital by firefighters, where he was later pronounced dead.
The Psychology Office of the Maritime Police was activated and is providing support to the victim’s family and friends.
The Horta Maritime Police Command is handling the incident.
