A 63-year-old man was rescued on Saturday after exhibiting symptoms of an initial cerebral vascular accident (CVA) while aboard the fishing vessel ‘Punta do Castro,’ which was navigating approximately 114 nautical miles, equivalent to 211 kilometers, northeast of Terceira Island in the Azores.
The Spanish citizen required “urgent hospital medical care,” according to a statement from the Portuguese Navy.
“The rescue was carried out by the EH-101 helicopter of the Portuguese Air Force, which transported the patient to São Miguel airport, from where he was later transferred to a hospital,” the statement added.
The rescue operation was conducted by the Ponta Delgada Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC Delgada) in coordination with the Urgent Patient Guidance Center – Maritime (CODU-MAR) and the Air Search and Rescue Center (RCC Lajes).
