
Five Portuguese nationals, aged between five and 28, were rescued on Monday morning on the island of Madeira after being swept away by a wave that surged over the Paul do Mar pier wall.
The National Maritime Authority stated that the Madeira Regional Civil Protection Service received the alert at 9:35 a.m.
At the scene, it was observed that “the five victims were pulled from the water by locals in the area, using the pier’s lifesaving buoys.”
Two of the victims received on-site assistance from firefighters, while the remaining three were transported to a hospital.
Personnel from the Funchal Maritime Police Command, the Funchal Lifeboat Station crew, the Volunteer Firefighters of Calheta, the Humanitarian Association of Firefighters of Ribeira Brava and Ponta do Sol, and SANAS Madeira were deployed.
The Funchal Maritime Police Command is overseeing the incident.
