Folha: Nobel Prize in Literature 2025 cancels attendance “due to health issues”

Hungarian writer László Krasznahorkai, recently awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature on October 9, has canceled his appearance at the Fólio – International Literary Festival of Óbidos due to “health issues requiring immediate attention”.

The author of works such as ‘Satan’s Tango’ and ‘Herscht 07769’ was scheduled to participate in a panel on ‘Death’ on the festival’s final day, Sunday.

In a statement to newsrooms on Saturday, the organization announced, “According to the publisher, ‘due to health issues requiring immediate attention’, the writer, who has already left the village of Óbidos, ‘will not be able to attend the events and media engagements he was so eager to participate in’.”

The statement added, “The Fólio organization wishes the author a speedy recovery and appreciates the audience’s understanding.”

The Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to Hungarian author László Krasznahorkai, whose book ‘Herscht 07769’ was described as a “captivating and visionary work that, amidst apocalyptic terror, reaffirms the power of art”.

Panel 15 will thus include Lionel Shriver and Rui Cardoso Martins, moderated by Isabel Lucas.

The Fólio, now in its 10th edition, has featured two Nobel Prize in Literature laureates, namely South African J.M. Coetzee, honored in 2003, and Belarusian writer and journalist Svetlana Alexievich, awarded in 2015.

Organized by the municipality of Óbidos in partnership with the municipal company Óbidos Criativa, Ler Devagar, and the Inatel Foundation, the Fólio has been held since 2015 in the UNESCO-designated Creative City of Literature, Óbidos.
