The Food Bank (BA) has announced a solidarity initiative encouraging food sharing with those in need, aimed at improving their quality of life.
The campaign, running over the weekend of November 29 and 30, involves over 41,000 volunteers in more than 2,000 stores. Participants are asked to donate non-perishable food items such as milk, canned goods, olive oil, sugar, flour, and pasta to the Food Bank.
Extending until December 7, contributions are also welcomed via the website www.alimentestaideia.pt and through product vouchers available at supermarket checkouts.
Isabel Jonet, President of the Portuguese Federation of Food Banks Against Hunger, emphasized that the donated goods will be sent to the warehouses of the 21 Food Banks across the country, where they will be processed for distribution.
The final products are distributed locally to people experiencing food shortages through more than 2,400 pre-selected social solidarity institutions.
Last year, the 21 Food Banks distributed 27,448 tons of food, valued at approximately 45 million euros, to roughly 380,000 individuals in need, providing them with either grocery parcels or prepared meals.
Founded in Portugal in 1991, the Food Bank aims to combat waste and deliver sustenance to those in need, working in partnership with charitable organizations through volunteer efforts.
Currently, 21 Food Banks operate in regions including Abrantes, Algarve, Aveiro, Beja, Braga, Castelo Branco, Coimbra, Cova da Beira, Évora, Leiria-Fátima, Lisbon, Madeira, Zona Oeste, Portalegre, Porto, S. Miguel, Santarém, Setúbal, Terceira, Viana do Castelo, and Viseu.
