Food basket is cheaper for the 3rd consecutive week. The difference

For the third consecutive week, the cost of a basket containing 63 essential food items dropped between August 27 and September 3, as analyzed by DECO PROteste.

Experts noted that this week, the basket costs 240.56 euros, marking a decrease of 3.74 euros compared to the value recorded three weeks ago.

During the analyzed period, there was a registered “difference of -0.61 euros when comparing the same basket on the two days (-0.25%)”.

However, the prices of liquid yogurt, red potatoes, and cooked chickpeas have risen by 10% since last week.

Since the beginning of the year, the basket costs an additional 4.39 euros, amounting to an increase of 1.86%.

Additionally, compared to January 5, 2022, when the analysis began, the basket cost 52.86 euros less. This indicates a difference of 28.16%, according to the report.

Moreover, DECO PROteste highlighted that “there are 15 products whose price has risen by more than 50% since the beginning of the analysis, in 2022”, including beef for boiling, eggs, oranges, and Frankfurt sausages.

It should be noted that the basket includes meat, frozen foods, fruits and vegetables, dairy, groceries, and fish, considering products such as turkey, chicken, mackerel, hake, onion, potato, carrot, banana, apple, orange, rice, spaghetti, sugar, ham, milk, cheese, butter, among others.

And the inflation rate?

The inflation rate increased by 2.8% in August, standing 0.2 percentage points above the variation in July, according to the provisional estimate released at the end of the month by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

Data gathered by the institute, still subject to revision, indicates an acceleration in the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

After the index difference in July compared to the same month last year was 2.64%, the rate shifted to 2.78% this month, as noted in INE’s statistical summary.

Inflation rate accelerates to 2.8% in August

The inflation rate increased by 2.8% in August, standing 0.2 percentage points above the variation in July, according to the provisional estimate released today by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

The underlying inflation indicator – the total index excluding unprocessed food and energy products – registered a variation of 2.5% compared to the August index of the previous year. In this case, the difference is equal to that of July.

“The variation in the index for energy products was -0.2% (-1.1% in July) and the index for unprocessed food products is expected to accelerate again to 7.0% (6.1% the previous month),” details the INE.

The overall variation of the CPI in relation to July (month-on-month) was negative, with the monthly difference being -0.2%. The decline was smaller than the decrease recorded from June to July, which was -0.4%.
