The price of the food basket increased by 1.01 euros (0.42%) in the last week, reaching 240.65 euros, announced DECO PROTeste on Thursday, highlighting that “this is one of the highest prices since the consumer protection organization began monitoring the price of this basket of essential goods.”
“At the beginning of this year, the food basket cost 4.49 euros less (1.90% less). In January 2022, when DECO PROTeste began this analysis, consumers spent 52.95 euros less (28.21% less) to purchase exactly the same food products,” the statement reads.
Tomato Prices Stand Out
DECO PROTeste notes that the price of cherry tomatoes increased by 36 cents per kilo (18%) in just one week.
“A kilo of this vegetable can now cost 2.45 euros. Cherry tomatoes have not been this expensive since May 7, when they cost 2.57 euros per kilo,” according to the statement.
Additionally, worth noting is that in the last week, from July 30 to August 6, aside from cherry tomatoes, the products with the largest percentage price increases were onions (13% more), tuna in vegetable oil (10% more), and Golden apples (9% more).
On the other hand, if we compare this week’s prices with those from the first week of the year, January 1, 2025, the highest percentage price increases were seen in products such as eggs (28% more), Gala apples (24% more), and oranges (22% more).
Furthermore, since DECO PROteste began this analysis on January 5, 2022, the largest percentage increases have been in beef for boiling (97% more), eggs (81% more), and oranges (68% more).
Since January 2022, the consumer protection organization “has been monitoring the evolution of essential food prices, analyzing the total cost of a basket every Wednesday, based on prices collected the day before at major supermarkets with online stores.”
“The average price per product in all online stores of the simulator is first calculated, where available. Then, by adding the average price of all products, the cost of the basket for a given day is obtained,” explains DECO PROTeste.
