Foreigner detained upon arrival in Portugal to serve prison sentence

A 60-year-old man, originally from Guinea-Bissau, was arrested by the Public Security Police (PSP) at Humberto Delgado Airport in Lisbon to serve a prison sentence of four years and seven months for drug trafficking.

In a statement released this Friday, the PSP explained that the arrest occurred as the man arrived on a flight from Spain following an international police cooperation request by Spanish authorities.

“The International Cooperation Unit of the PSP, in response to that international police cooperation request, found that the individual had an outstanding Arrest Warrant for several years to serve a prison sentence in Portugal,” the note stated.

The arrest warrant was executed by the Wanted and Missing Persons Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department and the National Unit for Foreigners and Borders, at Humberto Delgado Airport in Lisbon, “upon the arrival of the individual on a flight from Spain.”

Following his arrest, the man was transferred to the appropriate prison facility to serve the sentence imposed by the judiciary authority of four years and seven months for drug trafficking.

The PSP reiterated in the statement “its commitment to the safety of all citizens throughout the national territory and reinforces its ongoing dedication to the protection of people, property, and the maintenance of public order, contributing to the increase of subjective and objective security indices.”
