Foreigners’ law: Ventura in contact with PSD for “swift response”

“I am making contacts with the PSD, with the PSD Parliamentary Group, to ensure that, once there is a response [from the Constitutional Court], we have the joint capacity to quickly reformulate what needs to be reformulated,” stated André Ventura to journalists as he arrived at Quinta Monte Redondo, in Sintra, to participate in a session for the presentation of municipal candidates.

André Ventura mentioned that these contacts are still at an “initial stage,” taking place between parliamentary groups and not with the Government, noting that there have been no further discussions with the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, on the matter.

“We are attempting to create a platform between the benches, not to circumvent anything, but simply so that when the Constitutional Court’s decision arrives, we are ready to quickly respond to what needs responding to,” he said.

According to André Ventura, “what cannot happen here, as it has in other cases and other laws,” is for the laws to “never get resolved and never move forward” between the Constitutional Court, the Palácio de Belém, and the Palácio de São Bento.

The leader of Chega claimed that the country is “facing a very, very serious demographic situation,” arguing that the immigration law is urgent and that everyone must have “goodwill” to ensure its implementation.

“Unless the PSD is also not very eager to resolve this, and it has all been a ploy just to try to mask or gain electorate or avoid the problem,” he remarked.

If that is not the case, André Ventura expressed his belief that conditions are in place to “create a foundation, a platform” in the coming weeks to “resume the effort and resolve the issue,” both for the immigration law and the nationality law, at the beginning of September.
