A 29-year-old man was arrested by the PSP early Tuesday morning in São Domingos de Benfica, Lisbon, on suspicion of extortion after demanding money for the return of a bracelet left behind by a customer, the police reported today.
In a statement, the Lisbon Metropolitan Command explains that the victim forgot the bracelet in a TVDE vehicle, and upon contacting the driver, he allegedly demanded 100 euros for its return.
The woman arranged to meet with the suspect but arrived at the location accompanied by PSP officers, to whom she had reported the situation. When the man arrived with the bracelet and demanded payment, he realized the victim would not pay and “attempted to flee the scene, but was promptly intercepted by the officers accompanying her,” according to the statement.
The bracelet was recovered and returned to the owner, and the detainee was summoned for trial in a summary process.
