The former president of the Order of Nurses, Ana Rita Cavaco, and the current president, Luis Barreira, will be tried for embezzlement and falsification of documents, in a case that investigated the undue payment of kilometers in the form of subsistence allowances.
According to the newspaper Expresso, in this case, which involves 13 defendants, current and former leaders of the Order of Nurses (OE), the judge agreed with the prosecution’s accusation, with one exception: Luís Furtado, leader of the Azores.
The indictment, to which Lusa has had access, states that with regard to the defendants’ requests to open an investigation, the evidence produced at this procedural stage, “with the exception of the defendant Luís Carlos do Rego Furtado (and also in this case due to a misinterpretation of the documentary elements at the investigation stage), did not have the virtue of undermining the sufficiency of the evidence that underlies the indictment”.
The criminal case had been opened following a report by the General Inspection of Health Activities (IGAS) which indicated that, in three months of 2016 (July, August and September), Ana Rita Cavaco had received sums of between 3,265 euros and 3,984 euros, which meant that she traveled more than 400 kilometers a day.
At issue was the misappropriation of around 61,000 euros in total by all the defendants. Of these 61,000 euros, Ana Rita Cavaco was accused of misappropriating around 10,600 euros.
