Former Chega MP Miguel Arruda will be heard for the first time in the ongoing case that led to his departure from the party led by André Ventura, according to information provided to Lusa. This proceeding follows the January decision that saw Arruda become an unaffiliated MP.
At the end of January, the court requested the Portuguese Parliament lift Arruda’s parliamentary immunity. The Parliamentary Transparency Committee approved this request, enabling the former MP to be questioned as a suspect.
Miguel Arruda is under investigation for alleged crimes of qualified theft and property offenses. He is accused of stealing luggage from the baggage carousels at Lisbon’s airport upon returning from the Azores at the beginning of parliamentary sessions.
The ex-deputy was named a suspect on January 21, coinciding with police searches conducted at his residences in Lisbon and São Miguel. Further searches were conducted in his office on January 27.
