Former court official in Vila Viçosa accused of defrauding the state of €181,000

An indictment against a former judicial employee, charged with crimes of abuse of power, qualified fraud, and computer fraud, was announced in a statement on the official website of the Évora Regional Attorney General’s Office.

The indictment highlighted that “the defendant created documents within cases processed in Vila Viçosa that, if genuine, would have required payments by the Institute of Financial Management and Justice Equipment (IGFEJ).”

“The criminal scheme further implied that such payments were meant for bank accounts held by individuals personally and familiarly related to him, despite them having no involvement in the cases nor any right to receive money,” it added.

According to the prosecution, the events took place between April 2015 and 2021, during which “the defendant succeeded in acquiring the aforementioned payments from IGFEJ, money that he appropriated given his exclusive control over the bank accounts.”

“The Public Prosecutor has estimated the advantages gained from these illegal activities to be a total of 181,213.51 euros, requesting that the defendant be obliged to repay this amount to the state,” it underscored.

The prosecution also requested the imposition of an ancillary penalty prohibiting the defendant from performing public functions.

This investigation is being directed and managed by the Évora Regional Department of Investigation and Penal Action (DIAP).

Currently, there is a timeframe for a possible preliminary hearing request, which if not requested, will send the case to trial, it added.
