Former deputy João Barreiras Duarte has died. Marcelo recalls “sympathy”

The former deputy and Social Democratic Party (PSD) leader, João Carlos Barreiras Duarte, has died at the age of 60. In a statement, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa remembered him as “a personality that naturally evoked sympathy.”

“The President of the Republic extends heartfelt condolences to the family of João Carlos Barreiras Duarte, a long-standing PSD leader and parliamentarian, recalling his civic engagement and a personality that naturally evoked sympathy in his community life and, notably, in his national and local political life,” read a post on the Presidency of the Republic’s website.

The Municipality of Bombarral, where João Carlos Barreiras Duarte served in several capacities, also expressed “deep sorrow” over the politician’s death, acknowledging his “strong ties to local politics.”

“He held various positions, including Councilor and President of the Municipal Assembly of Bombarral. The Municipality extends its deepest condolences to his family and friends,” it stated.

Ricardo Fernandes, the president of the municipality, expressed his sorrow upon receiving “the news of João Carlos Barreiras Duarte’s passing, who contributed significantly to the political life” of the area.

João Carlos Barreiras Duarte was born on October 22, 1964, and served as a deputy in the Assembly of the Republic for Leiria for four terms.
