Former mayor of Valongo and former civil governor Fernando Melo has died.

Fernando Horácio Moreira Pereira de Melo was born in 1936 and graduated in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine of Porto, specializing in Gastroenterology.

After April 25, 1974, he joined the PSD, becoming member number 87 of that party.

His first political role was as president of the Regional Health Administration in the North (ARS-Norte), followed by Governor of Porto between 1991 and 1993.

In 1993, Fernando Melo was elected mayor of Valongo, in the district of Porto, a position he held for 18 years, resigning in 2012 for health reasons.

Among other positions, Fernando Melo was also president of Lipor – Associação de Municípios para a Gestão Sustentável de Resíduos do Grande Porto, president of the PSD Porto Jurisdiction, and a member of the Consultative Council of Futebol Clube do Porto.

The cause of Fernando Melo’s death was not disclosed.
