Former minister praises Marcelo’s speech: “Vision of pure race is a serious mistake”

The former PSD minister Ângelo Correia praised President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s speech during the June 10th celebration ceremony, asserting that the head of state was “very well” in explaining that the “Portuguese genesis is of many races.”

“Our DNA is sprinkled with DNA from many places, from various parts of the world we passed through, from people of many places and people who came to Portugal and to Portugal. This genetic mix resulted in what is Portuguese, that is an elementary truth,” explained Ângelo Correia in a commentary segment on CNN Portugal.

The social democrat emphasized that it is also due to this “genetic reality” that exclusion cannot occur.

“This is a serious mistake, moral, political, and above all, a civilizational error. At the moment we are going through and that the world is undergoing a set of situations, we must understand that we are in permanent coexistence with others. Globality has done that,” added the former PSD minister.

In his Tuesday speech, Marcelo described the Portuguese as a mix of peoples coming from all parts over centuries and argued that no one can claim to be purer or more Portuguese.

By “recalling the almost 900 years of the common homeland,” Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed “pride in those who made it, coming from all parts: Greeks, Phoenicians, Romans, Germanics, Nordics, Jews, Moors, Africans, Latin Americans, and Orientals.”

It should be noted that Marcelo, who ends his second presidential term on March 9th of next year, delivered on Tuesday his tenth and last speech on a June 10th as President of the Republic.
