Former president of the Chamusca Chamber Sérgio Carrinho died at 76 years old

Hailing from Pinheiro Grande, where he was born on January 18, 1949, Sérgio Morais da Conceição Carrinho began his professional career at the SPALIL tomato factory and quickly became involved in community associations and political activities. He also served in the military in Guinea in 1971.

He was elected as a councilor in 1976 and three years later became the president of the Chamusca Municipal Council under the then APU coalition (formed by the PCP and the Portuguese Democratic Movement/Democratic Electoral Commission), a position he held uninterruptedly until 2013 with the CDU (PCP/PEV/ID).

In a statement, the Chamusca municipality highlighted that throughout his more than three decades of leadership, Sérgio Carrinho promoted the electrification of the entire territory, the expansion of the water supply network, the modernization of the road network, and the construction of educational, cultural, sports, and health facilities, as well as the creation of new parishes.

“Recognized for his spirit of dialogue, closeness to the population, and exemplary dedication to public service, Sérgio Carrinho gained the respect of various political sectors, the admiration of his fellow council members, and the deep regard of the Chamusca community over more than three decades,” the statement says.

The municipality also recalls how Sérgio Carrinho faced “one of the most difficult moments in the recent history of the municipality—the fire on August 2, 2003—immediately coordinating the response and recovery of a deeply affected territory.”

The president of the Chamusca Municipal Council, Paulo Jorge Queimado, declared two days of municipal mourning to be observed on September 1 and 2, with the municipality’s flag at half-mast on municipal buildings.
