Former vice-president of the Aveiro Chamber Carlos Santos has died

In a statement, Ribau Esteves, the outgoing mayor of Aveiro, expressed his sorrow over the passing of Carlos Silva Santos, extending condolences to the bereaved family, and publicly acknowledged Santos’ work and dedication to the municipality.

Regarding municipal mourning, Esteves indicated that this decision would be made by the mayor-elect, Luís Souto Miranda, who will be inaugurated today at a ceremony scheduled for 18:00.

In the political realm, Carlos Santos served as the vice-president of the Aveiro City Hall from 2005 to 2013 and held several party positions within the PSD.

Professionally, he was an executive at Docapesca and the director of the Port of Aveiro, and he was also involved in the cooperative sector, being one of the main promoters of Agrovouga.

In sports, he played football for Beira-Mar and Académica, and basketball for Clube dos Galitos.

He further served as a sports official, notably as the vice-president of the Aveiro Football Association, a member of Beira-Mar’s management, and part of the Assembly of the Portuguese Football Federation.

Carlos Santos was the father of Cláudia Santos, who served as a PS deputy from 2019 to 2022 and was the PS lead candidate for the Aveiro Municipal Assembly in the local elections held on October 12.

The funeral ceremony is scheduled for Saturday at 12:00 at the Aveiro funeral center.
