The National Maritime Authority (AMN) revealed on Tuesday that it recorded “four fatalities on Portuguese beaches” between May 1 and August 31. Additionally, 667 rescues and more than three thousand first-aid actions were registered.
“Four months into the 2024 Bathing Season, the National Maritime Authority recorded, between May 1 and August 31, 667 rescues, 3,017 first-aid actions, and four fatalities on Portuguese beaches,” the statement reads.
Of the four fatalities, two occurred on supervised maritime beaches, one on an unsupervised maritime beach, and another in other unsupervised maritime areas.
The first death was recorded on May 27 at Algar de Benagil, in the municipality of Lagoa, with the probable cause being “sudden illness.”
On June 6, another person died, also due to sudden illness, on the supervised beach of Meia Praia in Lagos. The third victim died of “unknown causes” on July 16 at the supervised beach of Maria Luísa in Albufeira.
Lastly, a death was recorded last month, on August 19, on the unsupervised beach of Baía de São Martinho do Porto Sul, with the apparent cause being “sudden illness.”
